    Worldwide tech issues cause flight delays, cancellations at at RDU

    The Triangle is feeling the effects of a major technology outage that grounded flights worldwide Friday, July 19.

    Why it matters: Travelers flying in and out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport should brace for delays and cancellations throughout the day.


    By the numbers: As of 3:15pm Friday, 135 flights have been delayed at RDU and 56 have been canceled, per FlightAware.

    What they're saying: " Please check directly with your airline for specific flight information," RDU said in a statement .

    • The Federal Aviation Administration said airlines were working toward resuming normal operations, but to expect ground stops and delays intermittently at some airports and impacts of the outage could continue into the weekend .

    Zoom out: The impact of the outage is also disrupting other areas, including health care.

    • Essential computer functions at Duke University Health System hospitals and clinics were affected by the outage and caused delays for some patient services, per Duke Health .
    • "Clinics are open, and patients should plan to keep all scheduled appointments. In the event of any schedule changes, affected patients will be contacted by Duke Health," according to Duke Health's latest update.
    • The city of Raleigh's external service to apply for or check the status of permits was down until mid-afternoon.
    • "We are informed that the issue stems from a vendor software bug and is not related to any cybersecurity incident," Jordan Monaghan, a spokesperson for N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper's office, told Axios.
    • "The vendor is providing its customers steps to correct the issue and NCDIT is going through those steps as they are provided," Monaghan said. "NCDIT is working closely with state agencies as we all navigate this issue."
