The chance for severe storms became a reality Monday afternoon in central North Carolina.

Shortly before 3:15 p.m. a severe thunderstorm pushed through Durham, Granville, Wake and Franklin counties for a little over an hour.

The storm brought flash flooding to some areas, including a service road along side 15-501 in Durham. The driver of a white truck crashed into a hole in the ground while trying to cut the corner and avoid the flooded service road.

There are no reports of serious injuries from the storms.

There are currently no active severe thunderstorm warnings. However, there is a flash flood warning in effect for Durham and Orange counties until 6:15 p.m.

The storm activity is expected to continue through the afternoon with storms popping up periodically. That's why the National Weather Service placed most of the region under a Level 1 severe risk for Monday.

Heavy rain and strong wind are the biggest threats Monday; it is not likely but also not impossible for a tornado to spin up with these storms.

    Looking Ahead

Expect more scattered showers and storms throughout the week. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday will be near 90, dropping back into the low to mid-80s Thursday and Friday.

The wetter pattern may break this weekend as a cold front slowly pushes through the region.

A few showers/storms will be possible on Saturday. Sunday looks to be the drier portion of the weekend. Highs will be in the mid/upper 80s.

A large tree fell in west Raleigh, taking down some power lines, on Brandywine Road Monday morning. A few dozen people lost electricity.

It happened on Brandywine Road near Trinity Road.
