RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Recent heavy rainfall in the Triangle brought Falls Lake back to normal levels Thursday. As the weather forecast predicts clear skies this weekend, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reminds the community of some of the dangers that come with boating this time of year.

The Falls Lake chief ranger, Francis Ferrell, told CBS 17 that after heavy downpour, boaters should watch out for any debris that may be lurking beneath the surface.

Conserve water as hot, dry weather persists in NC, Johnston County officials say

“With a lot of rain and runoff, you can get more debris floating in the lake,” Ferrell said. That can be a hazard to boaters, especially if you’re hauling like a tube or water skier behind you.”

While boats steered clear of Falls Lake during the rain, a few fisherman situated themselves near the damn, even when the rain was its heaviest. Keith Love, one of the fishermen, told CBS17 that he wasn’t going to let a flood warning stop him from getting his catch.

The U.S. Army Corps also reminded CBS17 of the importance of wearing lifejackets when out on the water, especially because of how quickly conditions can change.
