RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Come November, the NC Democratic Party has taken matters to court to settle who is—and isn’t—allowed on the ballot.

In a lawsuit obtained by CBS 17, the state Democratic Party argues the We The People Party was created to reduce the number of signatures needed to get Kennedy on the ballot.

13,865 valid signatures are required to recognize a party. For comparison, 83,188 signatures are required to get on as an independent candidate. The elections board split 4-1 when it approved, “We the People.”
