CANTON, N.Y. (WWTI) – Calling all young outdoor enthusiasts! The New York State Department of Conservation (DEC) is gearing up for an unforgettable adventure with its upcoming youth turkey hunt, scheduled to take place in St. Lawrence County on Saturday, April 20.

Designed for youth between the ages of 12 and 15, this annual event promises an immersive experience in the thrilling world of turkey hunting. Set against the picturesque backdrop of St. Lawrence County's natural beauty, participants will have the chance to hone their outdoor skills and create lasting memories.

The hunt kicks off with an informative and engaging educational session at the Massena Rod and Gun Club on Saturday, April 13, starting at 11 a.m. Led by experienced instructors and DEC staff, this session will cover essential topics such as turkey behavior, hunting techniques, and safety protocols, ensuring that young hunters are well-prepared for their upcoming adventure.

The excitement continues the following week with the eagerly anticipated hunting expedition. Armed with newfound knowledge and skills, youth hunters will head out into the field accompanied by Environmental Conservation Officers, ready to put their training into practice and hopefully bag their first turkey.

Participation in the youth turkey hunt requires a valid New York State small game license and turkey tags. The event is free of charge, and equipment will be provided to participants as needed, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to fully enjoy this unique experience.

This special initiative is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Massena Rod and Gun Club, with generous support from the National Wild Turkey Federation and the New York Conservation Officers Association.

For those interested in joining the adventure or seeking additional information, please contact Lt. Troy Basford at (315) 265-2757 or ECO Ian Helmer at 315-559-8503.
