OnX, a leading outdoor digital navigation company, has made a significant move in the fishing world with its acquisition of TroutRoutes, a Minneapolis-based startup specializing in fly fishing map resources. The acquisition, for an undisclosed amount, signals OnX's expansion into the realm of freshwater fishing.

TroutRoutes provides anglers with detailed maps of public streams, access points, water conditions, elevation levels, and more through its mobile app and desktop platform. As part of the Traction Capital portfolio, TroutRoutes received a $500,000 investment in 2022, underscoring its potential in the outdoor recreation market.

With the acquisition, OnX is set to launch a new app called OnX Fish, designed to assist lake anglers with navigation and discovery. Leveraging TroutRoutes' expertise and data, OnX Fish aims to provide anglers with essential tools and information to enhance their fishing experiences.

According to Zach Pope, founder and CEO of TroutRoutes, the acquisition aligns with the shared values and synergy between the two companies. TroutRoutes has been dedicated to meeting the needs of trout anglers by consolidating stream and river access information and developing toolsets to facilitate exploration across the U.S. The platform, founded in 2019, was the first of its kind to map every designated trout stream in the continental U.S.

Despite the acquisition, TroutRoutes will continue to offer its toolset to customers during the upcoming spring trout fishing season, ensuring a seamless transition for users. OnX Fish is slated to launch on iOS and online exclusively in Minnesota this spring, with plans for expansion across the Midwest later in the year.
