Deputies fatally shoot man during gunfire exchange outside Inland Empire shopping center

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies shot and fatally wounded a man who fired at them outside a Rancho Cucamonga shopping center, authorities said.

Deputies were called to the shopping center around 9:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a man armed with a gun who was outside a Vons supermarket, according to authorities.

Witnesses said that when deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect crossed the street.

Deputies found the suspect, who was armed with a handgun, outside a Walgreens near the intersection of Carnelian and 19th streets, and when they approached him he shot at them, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department announced in a news release.

It's unclear if the suspect was wounded during that exchange, but he then ran into a nearby Sprouts Farmers Market, authorities said. There, the Sheriff's Department said, he was shot by deputies.

The department did not provide many details as to where and when he was struck, nor did it say whether the suspect fired any shots into or from inside the market.

Video from OnScene.TV showed a shattered glass door at the Sprouts and a sheriff's deputy being taken from the scene in the back of an ambulance. The Sheriff's Department said the deputy received "a superficial wound" during the shooting and was released from the hospital a short time later.

The suspect was identified as 31-year-old Davonte Sykes from Los Angeles. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital but later died from his injuries, the Sheriff's Department said.

Investigators believe that Sykes was involved in a separate shooting in Upland about an hour before the shooting in Rancho Cucamonga.

    The shooting is under investigation.
