Magalhaes brings innovation, science and excitement to Pork Center

Edison Magalhaes counts both among his skills and looks forward to sharing his excitement with colleagues and pork producers in Iowa. As the first-ever innovative swine systems extension faculty member in Iowa State University's Department of Animal Science, he began the position July 1 and is housed in the Iowa Pork Industry Center.
Iowa youth delegation competes in 2024 4-H Shooting Sports National Championship
Eighteen Iowa 4-H delegates showcased their skills and sportsmanship at the 2024 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships in Grand Island, Nebraska, June 23-28. The event hosted 708 youth from 40 states, competing in the compound archery, recurve archery, air rifle, air pistol, .22 rifle, .22 pistol, shotgun, muzzleloading and hunting skills disciplines.

Worth Co. 4-H successful at State Recognition Day
The Worth County 4-H was again very successful at the annual 4-H State Recognition day at Iowa State University earlier this year. Pictured above are the 4-H members from across the state who were recognized at the State 4-H Conference award ceremony recently. Worth County 4-Her’s Adylyn Petersen and Addyson Runde were named to the prestigious National 4-H Conference Washington D.C. delegate team of six Iowa 4-H members. Winning seats on the 2024-2025 State 4-H Council were Kamryn Backhaus, Jessika Ausborn, Ben Meier and Weston Willand. Backhaus, Landen Nelson and Willand were recognized as representatives to the National 4-H Congress Award trip to Atlanta Georgia with Meier and Runde selected as Iowa State 4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors representing Iowa next March in Washington D.C. Worth County was also well represented with five State 4-H project members including Adylyn Petersen (poultry), Kelsi Liddle (horticulture), Jessika Ausborn (dairy), Ben Meier (communications), and Addyson Runde (horse).
Area Student to Participate in Governor’s Charity Steer Show in August
The 42nd Governor’s Charity Steer Show will be held August 10th during the 2024 Iowa State Fair. The event, hosted by the Office of the Governor of Iowa, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council, helps raise money for the three independent Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City.

Rural hospitals built during baby boom now face baby bust
OSKALOOSA, Iowa — Rural regions like the one surrounding this southern Iowa town used to have a lot more babies, and many more places to give birth to them. At least 41 Iowa hospitals have shuttered their labor and delivery units since 2000. Those facilities, representing about a third of all Iowa hospitals, are located mostly in rural areas where birth numbers have plummeted. In some Iowa counties, annual numbers of births have fallen by three-quarters since the height of the baby boom in the 1950s and ’60s, when many rural hospitals were built or expanded, state and federal records show.
