Cedar Rapids school district gets approval to expand food program after Hy-Vee closure
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A meal site in Linn County will soon be expanding its operations in direct response to the closure of the First Avenue Hy-Vee. The Cedar Rapids Community School District will be operating a summer meal program out of the Johnson STEAM Academy building. just blocks away from the former 1st Avenue Hy-Vee.

Johnson County leaders buy property to be used for affordable housing
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - 15 apartments will soon be available for affordable housing in Iowa City, after a $1.7 million purchase by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. The property is at 1102 Hollywood Boulevard and includes two-bedroom, one-bathroom, partially furnished, two-story townhomes. The units are newly renovated according to a news release, but still need energy-efficient upgrades before people can move in.
Decorah puller Van Duyn shares the challenge and excitement of tractor pulls
Tractor pulls always pack the stands at county fairs, and Decorah puller Don Van Duyn has been “pulling” for the last 27 years. Van Duyn, owner of SEE Electric of Decorah, said he first became interested in tractor pulls in 1993, and four years later, he bought his first pulling tractor –a Schreier’s John Deere Model 4010 – from a man in Wisconsin. Van Duyn named the machine “Birch Hollow Deer” because of all the deer which live around his home, and his new purchase went through an extensive rebuild.
Community Action to buy Smith building for $1 Winneshiek County
Winneshiek County plans to sell Decorah’s historic Smith building to Northeast Iowa Community Action. During Monday morning’s Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors meeting, NEICAC Director Trisha Wilkins reported that the NEICAC Board of Directors recently approved the purchase of the Smith building – located at 305 Montgomery St. – from the county for $1. The formal deeding of the property will require a public hearing at a later date. The board generally agreed to on a tentative transfer date of Sept. 3, and will continue discussions with NEICAC regarding the expected sale.
Sioux Center driver's license spot closing
ORANGE CITY—The driver’s license station at the Centre Mall in Sioux Center will close this week, according to Sioux County treasurer Dan Zomermaand. He updated the county board of supervisors during its Tuesday, July 9 meeting about the planned move to the new treasurer’s building at 211 Central Ave. S. in Orange City across from the county courthouse.
E’Burg Schools Buy Land for New Elementary Building
–The Emmetsburg School Board recently approved purchasing approximately 24-acres of land that could be used as the site of a new elementary school. The undeveloped property sits east of Iowa Lakes Community College and south of College Drive in Emmetsburg. Superintendent Cory Jenness tells KLGA News that a recent review of the district’s facilities revealed that maintaining the West Elementary building for years to come would require a substantial investment.

Carroll Man Charged With OWI After Striking Parked Car, Tree Thursday Morning
A Carroll man has been arrested on operating while intoxicated charges after crashing into a parked vehicle and a tree during the early morning hours last Thursday. According to the Carroll Police Department, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Carroll and 14th Streets at approximately 12:56 a.m. Authorities say 35-year-old Colby Michael Boell was traveling northbound on Carroll Street in a 2014 Chrysler 200 and veered into the southbound lane, striking a legally parked 1996 Chevrolet K1500. The Boell vehicle then overcorrected after the impact and hit a tree in a yard northeast of the intersection. Boell was taken into custody on the serious misdemeanor charge and transported to the Carroll County jail for processing. The Boell vehicle sustained totaling damage. Officials note the car struck the tree with such force as to snap the trunk off at the base.
