New executive director for Boys State
The American Legion Department of Kansas Boys State Committee has appointed Kyle Wheatley to serve as the executive director of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas. Wheatley’s term began on July 1. He takes over for Tom Wierman who served in the role for the past four years.

The heat wave will last one more day before we get a break in the high temperatures. A heat advisory will be in effect for southeast Kansas, most of Oklahoma, southern Missouri and all of Arkansas today. Dirt work resumes for Emporia’s next hotel
Dirt work has resumed for a new hotel in northwest Emporia. Planning has been underway for months to build a new Fairview hotel facility at 3010 Eaglecrest, the former Montana Mike’s location. The plan is for a nearly 90-room hotel and convention center. Work is beginning three months after the Emporia City Commission approved a development agreement in April — and after the city granted Community Improvement District status for that property and the Hampton Inn next door at 2900 Eaglecrest.
