WYOMING COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — A Wyoming County woman was sentenced to prison for sex crimes against a minor.

On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, 33-year-old Brittany Kay Morgan, of Ravencliff, was sentenced to four years in prison for Display of Obscene Material to a Minor, one year in jail for Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, and one to five years in prison for Third-Degree Sexual Assault.

Morgan pleaded guilty to the crimes on March 13, 2024.

From around August 2021 to February 2022, Morgan not only engaged in sexual intercourse with a male minor, but she also put pornography on the minor’s cell phone and gave the minor vapes.

After a careful review of all aspects of this case and taking into account the wishes and desires of the victims and their families, including the risks involved in placing juveniles through the rigor of trial, the State reached a plea agreement with the defense. This case received a significant amount of publicity from the moment the accusations were made, placing immense pressure on the West Virginia State Police to make a premature arrest. Sex crimes are particularly difficult to prove. As a former investigator, I realize the enormity of the investigation, especially in light of technologies such as cellphones and computers used in everyday life.

The West Virginia State Police had my full support to conduct a thorough investigation, regardless of how long it took. One of the easiest ways to undermine a case is to rush an arrest without first conducting a complete and thorough investigation. Without a professional investigation, we would not have been able to secure a conviction and bring justice to the victims of this crime. I commend the State Police, in general, and Sergeant Palmateer, in particular, for disregarding the public outcry based on rumors and speculation and focusing on their job.

Bishop praised Sergeant Palmateer with the West Virginia State Police, Assistant Prosecutor Derek Laxton, and the entire prosecuting staff for their work on the case.
