University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna will open its nuclear medicine department Wednesday.

A ribbon-cutting will celebrate the new facility at 4 p.m. in the hospital's Medical Arts Building, 6847 N. Chestnut St. in Ravenna. The event will be in Room 150.

State-of-the-art SPECT-CT technology uses imaging techniques and radiopharmaceuticals to diagnose and treat medical conditions such as heart disease, cancer and bone disorders. The enhancements are possible because of a donation from the Portage Medical Center Foundation.

“This is investment in advanced nuclear medicine technology allows UH Portage Medical Center to provide patients with faster, more accurate diagnoses and effective treatments, and allows people to stay local to get treatment that can save their lives,” said Dr. Edward Bury, chair of the Department of Radiology at UH Portage Medical Center.

Over the past year, the Ravenna facility also has completed renovations to its Breast Health Center and Catheterization & Electrophysiology Department.
