Closing a road for a party? It's possible, a Ravenna city official said Friday.

The news that part of Lawrence Street in Ravenna will be closed for a graduation party Saturday drew questions from readers on the Record-Courier's Facebook page. Some residents wondered why the city did not notify them, while others stated they didn't know closing a street for a party was possible in the city.

One commenter also questioned the safety behind the closure in light of the recent shooting in East Akron that left one dead and 28 others injured during a block party.

Julie Ring, the administrative assistant to the mayor and service director of Ravenna, said a resident requested an assemblage permit for the event. It is up to the mayor to approve or deny those permits.

After a road closure has been approved through an assemblage permit, the city communicates the closure by sending out a press release to local reporters, Ring said.

Ring said the resident who requested the permit was told to let all the neighbors know about closure, why it would be happening, and how to be able to get in and out of the area. People who live in the area may enter, but the road is otherwise closed to cars between East Riddle Avenue and Murray Court from noon to midnight Saturday.

Lawrence Street is a residential side street off state Route 59. The closed section of road has one cul-de-sac side street, and the closure affects more than 20 households.

When asked about the street closure, City Council-at-Large President Amy Michael pointed to another resident who obtains assemblage permits to host annual Labor Day weekend block parties.

"It was a very nice and organized event. The street enjoyed, and they were able to get together get to know each other. I would often attend," Michael said.
