Former President Donald Trump raised some eyebrows this week when he vowed to be a "protector" for women , despite the fact that he has been found liable for sexual abuse and has faced sexual assault allegations from dozens of women.

"You will no longer be abandoned or scared, you won't be in danger any longer," Trump pledged to women voters this week. "You will no longer have anxiety from all of the problems our country has today. You will be protected and I will be your protector. You will be happy, healthy, confident and free. You will no longer be thinking about abortion.”

However, the Washington Post spoke with some women voters this week who were put off by the former president's vow to "protect" them.

"I don’t want to see a bunch of white guys telling me what I can and can’t do,” 55-year-old Darlene Gutman, a former North Carolina Trump voter who is now backing Vice President Kamala Harris, told the Post. "I’m an educated, intelligent woman — don’t tell me what’s best for me."

Gutman added that Trump's past treatment of women also made her doubt his sincerity.

"He has always been very degrading towards women, and I think that actually makes him sound very disingenuous,” she said.

Former Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-VA), a Republican who is backing Harris this year, was even more blunt in her assessment of Trump's pitch.

“It’s an insane message,” she said. “Women, first of all, can take care of themselves. They need to be protected from men like him.”

The Post also spoke with some Trump-backing women who weren't at all put off by his message, however.

“I’m a conservative and I’m a Christian, and I believe that the woman’s role is to be protected by a man, and I believe God gave those roles, so that’s not derogatory to a woman,” 63-year-old Trump voter Pam Baetz told the Post.
