'Remarkable lack of sense': J.D. Vance skewered by Ohio Dem who played him in debate prep

Sen. J.D. Vance is unoriginal, unfunny and not quite as clever as he thinks he is, according to the Ohio Democrat who once portrayed him in a round of pre-election debate prep.

Danny O'Conner spoke to Politico Thursday about preparing former Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) to debate in 2022 the challenger Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) will face for a national debate on Oct.1.

"There’s not really much in terms of original thought," O'Conner told Politico.

O'Conner dubbed Vance "one of the most dishonest human beings I’ve ever encountered" as he discussed with Politico what exactly Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate should expect from former President Donald Trump's.

The 90-minute debate will be aired on CBS News at 9 p.m. ET.

According to O'Conner, Walz should try to get Vance to tell some jokes.

"He thinks he’s the smartest person in the room," O'Conner said. "He’s just going to try and be smart and funny, and it just doesn’t work, because he’s not really that funny or smooth."

O'Conner predicted Vance will scoff at Walz — especially if the Minnesota governor calls him out on his record helping families struggling to make ends meet.

"Vance will laugh it off like it’s something that really doesn’t matter and that everyone should be indifferent about," O'Conner said. "He has a remarkable lack of sense of where voters are and what people are looking for out of their leaders."

Trump's own inability to formulate a cohesive plan could present problems for Vance, who won't have specific policy points to present the American people, according to O'Conner.

Instead, Americans will likely hear Vance laugh, he argued.

"If someone were to say, 'Senator Vance, you’ve supported a national ban on abortion in the past,' I guarantee he’ll laugh at that and say that’s not true, and then say why he doesn’t support it," O'Conner said.

"Generally he’ll laugh if something is absolutely true."
