'Desperation can lead to defeat': Warning signs mount for Trump's campaign

Donald Trump has been soaking up media attention in recent weeks after ceding the spotlight for weeks to Kamala Harris following her ascension as the Democratic nominee, and the Rev. Al Sharpton advised her team to respond more aggressively.

The former president has garnered heavy coverage of his speeches by making outrageous and false claims, which has wrested back some of the attention Harris has received since replacing president Joe Biden as the nominee, and Sharpton told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that she must fight back in the final weeks of the campaign.

"I'm hearing that they are strategically laying out these last four and a half, five weeks, and their surrogates to really spread this out," Sharpton said. "I hope that is true, because you must not get down, if it's a boxing match, to the last few rounds, and then slow up because that's where you can be in danger of getting knocked out or counted out in terms of the scorecard."

Trump has been highlighting specific violent crimes committed by undocumented migrants to attack Harris, but Sharpton said the GOP nominee was individually responsible for killing a bipartisan border security bill just months ago.

"Donald Trump is going to try, out of desperation, because he is looking at these poll numbers, he is looking at the fact that he's not filling up these rallies like he used to," Sharpton said. "He is going to be all over the place because he is desperate. But desperation could lead to defeat if there is a relaxation on the side of the Democrats, and here's a softball for them. This is a blatant lie that he is telling about what he did or did not do in terms of the Senate bill that could have dealt with the border. But a lie doesn't matter if everyone doesn't know he lied and understand the severity of that lie."
