J.D. Vance debate surrogate won't say if she wants Trump to be her 'protector'

Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), a surrogate for Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, deflected Tuesday when asked about former President Donald Trump's promise to be the "protector" of women.

Ahead of Tuesday night's vice presidential debate, Britt spoke to CNN host Dana Bash about the "gender gap" between Republicans and Democrats.

"And recently, Donald Trump said that he, he said, quote, ' I will be your protector ,' speaking to women," Bash noted. "What woman do you think he's trying to reach in saying, 'I will be your protector?' What's he trying to do there?"

Britt struggled to answer.

"So when you look at President Trump's presidency, um, and what he did for women during that time period, there were more women in the workforce than ever," the senator said.

"Do you want to be protected?" Bash pressed.

"And so, well, I do want my kids to be safe," Britt replied. "And I believe that the commander in chief should be in command."

"And I think what he is saying there, Dana, is that right now, Joe Biden is not in command."
