'Serious trouble-spot': Leaked internal memo warns GOP sees senatorial campaigns in danger

A leaked document from a powerful Republican super PAC spells trouble for GOP senators in 2025, Politico reported Monday.

The Senate Leadership Fund's latest polling report shows a slate of Republican candidates in states are struggling to keep up with Democratic opponents, according to Politico.

“We still have a lot of work to do to maximize our gains in this critical Senate election,” PAC president Steven Law reportedly wrote. “We also have to guard our flanks.”

The Senate currently has 51 Democrats (who included three independents) and 49 Republicans with 34 seats up for grabs in 2024, according to an analysis from 270toWin.com .

To reclaim control of the Senate, Republicans need to gain two seats if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the presidential election or one if former President Donald Trump wins, according to the analysis.

Politico's reporting suggests eight races in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Maryland, Michigan, Texas, Nebraska and Arizona all present problems.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) appears "surprisingly strong" in Ohio while Republican candidate Bernie Moreno is trailing by six points, according to the memo.

Democratic Sens. Bob Casey and Tammy Baldwin remain ahead of their opponents in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Politico reported.

Democrats Rep. Elissa Slotkin and Angela Alsobrooks' leads are growing in two open races in Michigan and Maryland, the memo reported.

Incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) only maintains a single point lead over Rep. Colin Allred and a race pitting Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) against independent Dan Osborn was described as "a serious trouble-spot," Politico reported.

Republican Sam Brown trails first-term Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in Nevada by 7 points and in Arizona Kari Lake trails Rep. Ruben Gallego by 5 points, according to the memo.
