Former President Donald Trump's tariff proposal would deliver a punch to the gut to Trump's businesses — and cause MAGA supporters to pay dramatically more for branded merchandise he sells, Newsweek reported Friday.

Trump's signature policy proposal for his 2024 campaign is to replace much of the existing federal tax structure with a broad-based tariff on nearly all goods and services — something that economists have warned would cripple the economy and send prices skyrocketing. Fox News hosts have even questioned him on the plan.

"During his presidential campaign, Trump has called for tariffs of 10-20 percent on 'countries that have been ripping us off,' along with tariffs of at least 60 percent on products from China specifically," wrote James Bickerton. However, "When Newsweek reporter Jesus Mesa visited Trump Tower in Manhattan on October 11, he found a wide range of Trump-branded merchandise was for sale that was labeled as being made outside the United States," including "drinking flasks, jackets, baseball caps and woolly hats made in China, shirts and jackets made in Vietnam and towels from Bangladesh."

In most cases, Newsweek suggested, Trump's businesses would just pass those costs on to Trump's supporters — in the form of higher prices.

This comes after reports that Trump's "God Bless the USA Bibles," which include large-print editions of the Old and New Testaments plus the Bill of Rights and Lee Greenwood lyrics, are also made in China and marked up from less than a $3 manufacturing cost to $60 retail price.

Oklahoma public school systems, which were stealthily directed by the state's far-right superintendent to buy these Bibles, could end up paying the tariffs on top of that markup.

The Harris campaign has slammed Trump over the tariff proposal, arguing that it effectively amounts to a nationwide sales tax. Trump has denied his plan would cost American consumers anything, although he appears to not understand how tariffs work .
