It’s not just about using a deep conditioner.

The second your hair starts feeling dry, it’s time for some TLC intervention. Parched strands are a sign that your hair isn’t in its healthiest state, which can lead to issues like breakage, split ends , frizz, and tangling.

“If it feels rough, brittle, or straw-like, it’s crying out for moisture,” says celebrity stylist and natural hair care expert Marquita Lynch . “Dry hair also lacks shine and luster—no matter how many oil-based products you sit on top of it.”

On the other hand, moisturized hair (and scalp ) has more vibrance, elasticity, and bounce. So what’s the secret to keeping hair moisturized? We asked stylists to fill us in on their best tips and tricks.

    Focus on Lightweight Hydration First

Before reaching for heavy deep conditioners or hot oils , think lighter. “Start by incorporating water-based products into your routine,” Lynch says. “You can’t lock in moisture that isn’t there, so it’s important to use products that draw moisture into your hair.”

Lock in Moisture with Oils and Creams

With lightweight hair hydration covered, you can now lock in that extra moisture with cream or oil-based products . This also helps seal the cuticle for a shinier look. “Not all oils are right for every hair type,” says Clyde Haygood , celebrity hairstylist and Pura D’Or ambassador. “Fine hair needs lighter oils that won’t weigh hair down, while coarse hair needs heavier oils.”

    Deep Condition Weekly

Along with using daily lightweight and lock-in moisture products, you can give your hair some moisture-boosting TLC with a weekly deep conditioning treatment .

“Leave it in for at least 10 to 15 minutes for best results,” says celebrity stylist Rogerio Cavalcante , owner of The Second Floor Salon. “A salon trick is to heat up the hair while you have the deep conditioning treatment on. Heat opens up the hair cuticle, allowing the conditioner to penetrate deeper. You can use a heat cap, sit under a hooded dryer, or wrap your hair in a warm towel while the treatment sits.”

    Consider Co-Washing Your Hair

Instead of shampooing and conditioning your hair every time you wash, consider co-washing your hair to help boost moisture. This is especially helpful for those who wash more than every other day. Co-washing involves skipping the shampoo and washing your hair with conditioner, explains Cavalcante. He says “This helps keep natural oils intact and won’t strip hair of hydration.

    Use Moisturizing Dry Shampoos

Dry shampoo is another way you can extend your style without resorting to shampooing. There are even products that contain nourishing, hydrating ingredients, Cavalcante notes.

    Blow Dry With Ionic Technology

It’s hard to get away from blow drying your hair, but this glam step is notorious for creating dry, damaged hair. Instead of completely eliminating heat styling from your routine, cut back on frequency and use high-quality tools.

“Use ionic-based hair dryers, which won’t damage hair as much as a traditional hairdryer,” says Kseniya Kobets , MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist. An ionic hair dryer releases negative ions that break down water molecules on the hair. This speeds up your dry time while reducing frizz for healthier, shinier, and more manageable hair.

    Use Ceramic or Tourmaline-Plated Irons

Similarly, make sure you’re using high-quality curling and flat irons when styling your hair. Ceramic and tourmaline plates distribute heat more evenly and allow hair to glide over the surface more easily. This minimizes hot spots and tugging, and can also help lock in moisture for a smoother, shinier finish.

    Protect Your Hair at Night

One overlooked step for keeping hair moisturized is how you treat it when you sleep. “Cotton pillowcases can absorb moisture, so I always recommend wrapping your hair in a satin scarf or using a satin pillowcase to prevent that overnight moisture loss,” Lynch says. “You can also apply a light mist of water and a few drops of your favorite sealing oil before bed to maintain hydration while you sleep.”

Apply Scalp Treatments at the Root

When dealing with dandruff, itchy scalp, or other issues that require routine treatments, Dr. Kobets recommends focusing the scalp treatment product toward the root. For example, “if you are using shampoos with salicylic acid or ketoconazole, you may want to avoid extending it to the hair and just keep it at the roots since they can dry out the hair,” she says. Also make sure to follow instructions on the label and/or from your doctor.
