If eyes are the key to the soul, brows are the gates. Whether you leave it to the pros or tweeze yourself, getting your brows to look their best doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Still, there are many things you can do to improve the shape, color, and look on your own. Here are six brow hacks from the pros to consider trying.
1. Tweeze by the window.
Not all of us live in the brightest homes, but tweezing in the dark does your brows a real disservice. Jared Bailey , Benefit's global brow expert, suggests putting a mirror by a window and tweezing in that spot. After all, you can't tweeze what you can't see.
2. Check the hair's direction before tweezing.
According to Bailey, the most common mistake people make when tweezing is removing the hair in the wrong direction. “Each hair is connected to a tiny blood vessel that keeps it healthy and allows it to grow back when the hair is removed. Once that vessel is ruptured, the hair never returns.”
Hold the skin tight with one finger and tweeze in the direction that the hair is growing. “Tweeze the direction is upward or toward the temple, rather than straight out,” he says.
It can take three to six months for your brow hair to complete and restart a new growth cycle. However, there are a few things you can do to help speed up the process . “For an active approach to brow hair growth, try incorporating a topical product to your nightly skincare routine. Apply it nightly to clean, dry brows before skin care products for better brows in your sleep.”
4. Massage your brows nightly to encourage hair growth.
This hack is one of the best because not only is it minimal effort, it’s also free. “Give your brow bone a micro-massage with your fingertips when going through your skin care routine by gently using the fingertips to tap over each brow for about 30 seconds,” says Bailey. “Since every hair is connected to a tiny blood vessel, stimulating blood flow to the brow area can help encourage healthy hair growth.”
5. Laminate your brows.
If your brows don’t look full with makeup alone, or you want to be able to do your brows quickly in the morning, consider a treatment like brow lamination . “Brow lamination is a chemical treatment that repositions the brow hair and overall shape by removing the brow hairs natural bend or curve,” says Bailey. “A service like this lasts six to eight weeks and makes it easy to fan out the brow hairs and cover more surface area on the skin, so you’re not just reliant on makeup alone.”
Brow lamination also makes it much faster to do your brows in the morning. Just comb, fill in with a few strokes of a pencil, apply a brow gel, and go.
6. Use the right product.
There are so many brow products out there that it’s hard to know which is the right one for your particular needs. “ Pencils are great tools for sketching and creating natural-looking brows," says Bailey. "Using microliners allows you to create believable fullness by simply flicking the pencil in the same direction of your hair growth.”
Powders are best suited for people who are looking to add an overall wash of color to the brow. “These also tend to work better with people with finer brow hair because you want the powder to go underneath the hair and onto the skin. Thanks to their buildable and blendable formula, filling in sparse brows or patches can be done in seconds.”
Bailey calls gels the little black dresses of brow products. “There are so many types out there on the market and just about anyone with brow hair can use one," he says. "My personal favorite is fiber gels, like Gimme Brow+. Fiber gels give the strength to control the hair's direction and give your brows instant volume.”
