When determining the Color of the Year, it's always important to take a range of behavioral and lifestyle factors into account, explains Ashley McCollum, PPG color expert for Glidden. McCollum and her team review demographics, fashion, textile, and automotive trends, and more, to determine what shades are currently top of mind.

"We know that commercial trends end up trickling down into residential, so we are always pulling reports about consumer mindset and consumer behavior," McCollum says. "How people are feeling will dictate the colors that they are craving."

How to Use Purple Basil at Home

Wondering how to best incorporate this cheerful color into your own home? McCollum notes Purple Basil's versatility indoors and out. With regard to residential exteriors, the hue will complement a range of home styles, including gothic, Victorian, Cape Cod, craftsman, and more. Use it to paint your front door or mailbox, or add it to your window boxes or shutters for some major curb appeal .

Indoors, McCollum foresees the color looking particularly stylish on cabinetry throughout the home. Purple Basil would also make for an excellent hue to color drench a room with, she adds, citing a home office as one such example. "Varying the sheen on each surface will highlight key features and disguise a room’s less desirable features, like radiators," she shares.

Both warm and cool tones pair nicely with Purple Basil, making it easy for homeowners to take the color in any direction they choose.

As a whole, "Consumers are just leaning into color now," she says. "They're not afraid of it anymore." Rather than worrying about resale values or what others might think, people are painting their spaces in shades that bring them joy, McCollum explains. "Purple Basil is perfect, because it gives you the calming quality because it has that blue undertone, but it's also made of a red, which is energizing."
