Bathrooms are easily one of the most important rooms in the home. Aside from their necessary and functional purposes, bathrooms also play a significant role in increasing a home's value and making a home more attractive to buyers. So, it makes sense that people would invest good money to make their bathrooms more functional and design-forward. In fact, according to the 2024 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study , investment in primary bathroom projects is up 11% from the previous year, with the top 10% of spend starting at $45,000. Below, find out which bathroom upgrades are trending up this year.

    Sustainability

Sustainability is becoming more and more important to homeowners. According to Houzz, 84% of renovating homeowners choose sustainable features during primary bathroom renovations. The reason behind the increased interest in sustainability is two-fold: 56% of homeowners are driven by the environmental impact and 69% of homeowners are driven by long-term cost effectiveness.

    Aging-in-Place Accommodations

Not all bathroom renovations are done with a home sale in mind. Some are much more about doing what it takes to make the space more comfortable while you're there. For 64% of homeowners, that means addressing special needs for members of the household. Of those homeowners, 46% are making accommodations that aging household members will need in the future—and 37% are addressing their current needs.

Grab bars are a common accommodation being made for those aging in place, with 64% of renovating homeowners adding this feature to their bathrooms.

    Wet Rooms

If you dream of a modern, European-style bathroom, this trend might be right up your alley. According to the report, 1 in 8 renovating homeowners characterize their primary bathroom as a "wet room." Wet rooms are fully waterproofed bathrooms in which the shower floor is typically the same level as the rest of the bathroom and/or a freestanding tub is included in the open shower area. Houzz reports that the primary motivations for wet rooms are that people see them as a better use of space and appreciate their universal design, aesthetics, and ease of cleaning.

    Eclectic Style

Overall, the top three primary bathroom styles have remained the same since last year. Transitional style is still in the top spot (with 23% of homeowners renovating their bathrooms to fit this look), followed by contemporary style at 15% and modern style at 11%. However, the Houzz report also found that eclectic style is gaining more traction, with 5% of homeowners renovating their bathrooms with this general aesthetic in mind. While that may not seem like much, according to the report, eclectic style is now even with farmhouse style when it comes to bathroom renovations.

    Specialty Toilets

Compared to an inviting shower or roomy bathtub, the toilet may not seem like a very exciting choice for a renovation—but you might be surprised by how many people are investing in better porcelain thrones. According to Houzz, more than two in five homeowners install toilets with specialty features. These special toilet features include bidet seats (23%), bidet seats with water pressure (21%), self-cleaning functionality (19%), air dryers (17%), and heated seats (17%). So, if you've been dreaming of revamping your toilet, just know you're not alone.
