The portable gadget also works on carpets and car interiors.

Since I live in a tiny New York City apartment, my home inevitably gets dirty fast. My roommate and I share just about everything in our small living space, including her two-year-old black velvet couch, which highlights every dust bunny and crumb left behind. It didn’t take long before we started looking for an upholstery cleaner to seriously deep clean the furniture piece.

With limited storage space, I knew it was essential to find something compact that could hide in a cabinet. After seeing several videos and raving reviews of the viral Bissell Little Green Machine on social media, I knew I had to give it a go. The cleaner’s portable design, powerful suction, and versatile cleaning abilities impressed me so much, I had to show off the shocking results on Real Simple ’s Instagram .

I was pleasantly surprised by the initial unboxing of the gadget, which laid out clear instructions on how to piece the major parts together and start cleaning. I was expecting to feel overwhelmed by how to operate the machine, but it was simple, which makes sense as to why our team awarded it the “easiest-to-use upholstery cleaner.”

All it took was filling up the 48-ounce tank with clean water, adding cleaning solution, and plugging in the gadget’s 15-foot cord to the nearest power outlet, which was thankfully by my couch. Then came the fun part. I was determined to clean every nook and crevice on my couch, and I succeeded in less than 20 minutes.

Our couch is a traditional sectional that fits up to three people, but since we sit on it constantly, I figured the seat cushions were the best place to start. I began there and worked my way up to the armrests. The device has a spray button on the hose, allowing me to accurately target the intended area before scrubbing and sucking up gunk at the same time. I could immediately see a difference in the couch's texture with each pass.

The cushions, which once looked grimy and worn down, now looked fluffy and fresh. I went over each strip of fabric a few times to be absolutely certain that nothing was left behind. And I saw the effects in the tank, which filled up with a gross, light brown liquid. When I shook it around, lingering hairs and debris could be seen floating throughout. It was disgustingly gratifying to see  how hard it worked.

I mostly used the Tough Stain Tool to clean my couch (and later my living room rug), but I like that it also comes with multiple nifty attachments. The spraying crevice tool is ideal for cleaning hard-to-reach areas like stairs or car seats, while the HydroRinse tool rinses dirty water lingering in the hose.

The tank size is so large, I didn’t have to refill it, even after my tasks were done. And the clean up was easy; I just dumped the water from the dirty and clean tanks, rinsed them out, and let them air dry.

To be expected, the couch and rug were both pretty damp immediately after cleaning. But by the next day, they both were dry, looked completely brand new, and smelled significantly more fresh. I used the Oxy spot and Febreze cleaning solution that came with the package, but you could easily mix in a different scented (or unscented) solution.

The Bissell ceaner’s portable design is one of my favorite features, but the built-in handle is a close second. It allowed me to carry it from room to room, and because it weighs just under 10 pounds, I didn’t get tired while holding it. Plus, the machine’s compact build makes it a breeze to store under a sink or on top of a shelf for easy access.

I couldn’t recommend the Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet Cleaner enough as a simple, practical, and satisfying cleaning solution for furniture and carpets. But if you need a little more convincing, just take a glimpse at the 65,100 five-star ratings from other Amazon shoppers.

It’s truly no surprise that the machine has secured the number one spot on Amazon's Best-Sellers list . And it’s getting more love since more than 50,000 shoppers claimed one of their own in the past month.
