Looking for a way to really take your walls to the next level? Try double drenching, a new, innovative paint trend coined by UK-based brand Little Greene. Similar in concept to color drenching , double drenching involves using two or more related colors within a space to cover all surfaces and create a dramatic effect.

"A double drenching approach is about fully enveloping a space with color. There is no space for white ceilings or skirting with this decorating style," says Ruth Mottershead, Little Greene's creative director. To find out more about this emerging technique and how to bring it into your own home, read on.

How to Double Drench in Your Home

Key to the practice is selecting colors from the same family with different undertones , varying the hue rather than the strength, Mottershead explains. For example, she notes, try using a turquoise blue alongside both a true blue and a muted indigo.

Double drenching can greatly transform any type of space. As Mottershead explains, the technique "can work to add unexpected contrast to modern homes where architectural detail is lacking, highlighting the ceiling, walls and woodwork or zoning spaces, or it can draw attention to more classical architectural elements within period properties."

Use it to Reinforce Your Room's Theme

The colors you select as part of your double drenching approach will work wonders in helping to achieve a variety of different vibes within the home.

"By using two or more shades of green, you can achieve a room that captures the power of nature whilst feeling cohesive, sophisticated, and visually engaging," Mottershead says. She recommends trying a bold, leafy-inspired green with a citrine as well as a dark green to design a "cohesive, harmonious and visually exciting" space.

Use it to Incorporate Bold Colors

"By incorporating red in a double drenching scheme combined with other related hues, you can create a grounding contrast that emphasizes the complex nature of a bold red ," Mottershead says. "This subtle contrast can highlight architectural features or zone-specific areas of a room without it feeling overpowering, allowing for differentiation while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.”
