Transform your home into an autumnal oasis.
Fall is officially here. The days of crunchy brown leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, and whispering winds are ahead. Even if you're a little sad that summer is over, there's something nice about spending more time indoors. This also means it’s time to give your home an autumnal refresh . Here are five cozy touches your home needs this fall.
Sarah Latham is the principal designer at Latham Interiors
Amy Switzer is an interior designer and the founder of Amy Switzer Design
Hilde Leiaghat is the founder and creative designer of Pom Pom at Home
A Cozy Throw Blanket
Fall is a strange time. Some days it’s 85 degrees, and a week later, it’s a frosty 50. So, a nice throw blanket can make you feel warm and cozy on those colder days. Want something extra soft? You really can't go wrong with cashmere, says interior designer Sarah Latham. “A cashmere throw is my go-to for adding a cozy touch," she says. "There is nothing better than cozying up with a soft, warm throw while watching a movie on a rainy day.”
Whether you end up with something luxurious like cashmere, classic cotton, or even chic linen, the right hue will help create that fall ambiance in any room of the home. “I tend to go for warm autumn shades or winter whites,” says interior designer Amy Switzer, emphasizing the importance of versatile textures. “I love chunky knits and faux fur throws. Textiles are what really create warmth for a room,” she explains. “Then create layers by draping your throw over couches, chairs, or even placing it at the foot of the bed.”
Throw Pillows
A fresh new set of throw pillows can also make a big difference. “I would also add solid velvet pillows to layer in with various textural pillows for fall,” Switzer says.
Don’t be afraid to add an extra pillow or two to your cart. “You can never have enough pillows, so add a few throw pillows for extra cozy layers . This season I am loving bouclé textures,” shares designer Hilde Leiaghat.
The Right Candle
An autumnal scent can add warmth, coziness, and ambiance to a space. Go for woodsy fragrances or even gourmand blends that smell like your favorite fall treats. “Choose fragrances like pumpkin spice, cinnamon, or apple cider,” Switzer says.
Then make sure you house your candles in the perfect vessel. “Candles in copper or ceramic holders provide a more autumnal aesthetic."
Bring in Touches of Nature
Leiaghat is a fan of bringing touches of nature inside. “The easiest trick to transition to the fall season is to bring nature into your home with dried branches or leaves," she says. "As simple as it sounds, these added natural elements coupled with warm and inviting textiles like throws and pillows add depth and interest to your home.”
Adding some pinecones you find outside to a wood or ceramic bowl on your coffee or entryway table can also add a small yet impactful touch.
An Extra Duvet Insert
Having a warmer duvet insert can make those chilly mornings extra cozy—or simply add a second one to make your bed look and feel even fluffier. “As the months get cooler, you will need pieces to keep you warm while sleeping," Leiaghat says. "Add a heavier duvet insert, which will add warmth and extra fluff to your bed.”
