Dry shampoo is easily one of the best beauty inventions of all time, but despite its practicality, there is occasionally some room for improvement. Enter: a plethora of hair hacks to maximize the product. Hairstylist Matt Newman took to TikTok with what might be one of the most genius dry shampoo hair hacks we’ve seen yet. In fact, it might even convert non-users into devotees and change the game for those already using it religiously.

#dryshampoo is a great hairstyling tool, but not everyone can tolerate the texture it leaves behind- if that sounds familiar, maybe this will help! #hairtips #hairstyle #hairtok #hairhack #hairbrush

This dry shampoo hack is simple enough—simply spray your dry shampoo to a paddle hairbrush and then brush through from the root to mid-shaft.

“I love this hack,” says celebrity hairstylist Robin Emtage . “Applying dry shampoo to a brush instead of directly spraying it onto your roots is a smart way to distribute the product more evenly and gently.”

She explains that when you spray dry shampoo straight onto your scalp, you can often get those weird and super obvious ‘hot spots’ where too much product builds up in one area. This is especially annoying if you have dark strands since most dry shampoos have a white hue to them. With this hack, though, you give your scalp a lighter, more diffused application of dry shampoo that looks more natural. It can also help distribute the product more evenly, making it more effective at getting your entire scalp.

In a nutshell, here’s why this dry shampoo hack just makes sense:

    • Lighter feel: You’re avoiding the heavy, chalky spots that can weigh your hair down.
    • Fewer hot spots: The product is more evenly distributed, so you won’t have those pesky clumps of powder in one area.
    • Added volume: Because you’re brushing the dry shampoo through your hair, you’ll notice more lift and natural volume as the product spreads evenly.

The only potential downside is that you may end up using more product in the process. Some of it can stay on the brush rather than making its way into your hair. “I still think it’s a small price to pay for a fresher, more natural look,” says Emtage.

    Step-by-Step Guide

The paddle brush dry shampoo hack is easy enough, but there are a few nuances to take into consideration if you want to nail it.

Step 1: Spray Dry Shampoo on a Paddle Brush

Spritz dry shampoo onto a clean, dry paddle brush. Emtage notes you can also use a dry powder if that’s what you have on hand. “I recommend using a high-quality paddle brush with natural bristles,” she says. “Something like a boar bristle brush would be perfect since it helps distribute the product evenly and works the dry shampoo into your scalp and hair without causing frizz.” A kabuki-style brush also works for more precision.

    Step 2: Brush Onto Roots

Gently brush your hair at the roots, moving slowly and pressing the dry shampoo into your roots. You can draw the brush down to your upper-mid shaft to further disperse the dry shampoo.

    Step 3: Style per Usual

Give your hair a minute or two to fully absorb the dry shampoo, then determine whether you need another application. If not, go ahead and style as desired.
