    Portage HS scores | May 13: Field softball holds on for sectional title

    Field softball held on for a 5-4 victory over Jefferson Area in Monday's Division II sectional final.

    Jessica Pollard singled and doubled for the Falcons (22-3) while Kailyn Gressman and Lilli Sutkowy added two singles apiece. Maddie Burge tossed a complete game to earn the win for Field.

    Regular Season

    Rootstown 11, Northwest 9

    Shelbie Krieger reached the 800 career strikeout mark in a win. Kaitlyn Hammerschmidt led a prolific Rovers lineup, going 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and six RBIs. Lilly Kamenash, Boston Silveus, Abby White and Krieger all added multiple hits for Rootstown.

    Baseball sectionals

    Mogadore 1, Crestwood 0

    Ronnie Skye tossed a shutout, not walking a hitter and throwing 69 of 101 pitches for strikes, to lead the Wildcats to a Division III first-round win. Jake Hopkins drove in the lone run of the game, bringing Devin Graham home. Graham reached base twice for Mogadore, singling, walking and stealing two bases.

    Rootstown 6, Clearview 2

    The Rovers scored three runs apiece in the first and sixth, never trailing in their Division III first-round win. Austin Biggin tossed six sharp innings for Rootstown, scattering two runs (both unearned), one hit and four walks while striking out 15. R.J. Soika pitched a scoreless seventh to finish the game for the Rovers. Biggin also went 3-for-3 with a double, while Joe Weaver went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

    Salem 2, Roosevelt 1

    The Quakers walked it off in the bottom of the seventh for a Division II first-round win. Carson Rhodes threw a two-hitter for Salem, yielding just an unearned run and striking out nine. Luke Haney and Jack Smith had Roosevelt's lone hits with a single apiece. Trystan Page took the hard-luck loss, allowing two runs in 6.1 innings for the Rough Riders (11-13).

    Edgewood 8, Ravenna 2

    The Warriors took control of Monday's Division II first-round game with four runs in the first and two in the second. The Ravens fell despite two hits apiece from Michael Fuller, Peter Jennings and Rylan Eldredge.

    Cardinal Mooney 4, Southeast 3

    Four errors and three unearned runs doomed the Pirates in their Division III first-round game as the Cardinals scored all four of their runs in the top of the fifth inning. Southeast fell despite four solid innings from Nate Muncy, in which he allowed four runs (one earned), and three scoreless innings of relief from Joe Sharish. Logan Lavigna had the Pirates' lone extra-base hit with a double, while Zach Keto, Cohen Richardson, Muncy and Sharish added a single apiece.
