The city of Streetsboro will break ground Sept. 17 on its new City Hall .

The building is planned for the same State Route 43 property where the City Center project is underway. It will include the new city hall, inclusive playground, restroom facilities and splash pad near the new fire station on State Route 43, where the former city hall was located.

Mayor Glenn Broska recently stated that work has begun on the splash pad, which is expected to open in the spring.

Levelheads , the Valley View architectural firm hired to design the building, also designed Streetsboro's Community Center that opened in spring . Cavanaugh will be the construction contractor. Previously, Broska said the project would take about 15 months.

    Six years of renting

The city's administrative offices have been in temporary housing since 2018, when the City Hall building next to the fire station was demolished . City offices are at 555 Frost Road. The parks department, including the senior center, recently moved into the community center that opened in March.

Since leaving the state Route 43 building, which was once an elementary school, the city has been planning a city center project on the same property. Although the design details changed over the years, a city hall, fire station and some sort of recreational facilities always were planned for the property.

The fire station opened in 2021. The current plan calls for a splash pad, playground, athletic fields, additional parking, driveways and other improvements, such as utilities and wayfinding signs, as well as infrastructure for the new developments and the city hall.

The building, architects said previously, will be a single-story, 90-foot by 180-foot building with an outdoor courtyard in the center. Its parking lot would have 44 spaces, with overflow space nearby.

The estimated construction cost is just over $7 million, said City Engineer Justin Czekaj.

    Making a splash

Work on the City Center project , which includes a splash pad, restroom and infrastructure to support it and the future city hall, started this spring. Eventually, a playground is planned for the site.

Previously, Broska said he hoped to open the splash pad by year's end, but supply chain issues hampered construction.

Broska previously also said the site will feature an "oval," or a large open space that will be a little bigger than a football field. The space is expected to host events such as farmers markets, and there is talk of a gazebo.
