A former associate dean of Kent State University's College of Nursing will receive a national honor.

Mary K. Anthony, a Kent State University College of Nursing professor emerita and former associate dean for research, will be inducted to the American Academy of Nursing at its annual Health Policy Conference this fall in Washington, D.C.

The newest fellows, selected from a competitive pool of applicants, represent 37 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and 14 countries.

“This is a prestigious invitation, recognizing Dr. Anthony’s contributions at the regional, national, and international level,” said Versie Johnson-Mallard, dean of Kent State University College of Nursing. “We are very proud of Dr. Anthony’s accomplishments, and it brings me great joy to welcome her into the Academy. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor.”

Anthony’s research focuses on models of nursing care delivery and the work environment including communication, interruptions and shared governance. Her research has been funded by federal, professional and local organizations. Anthony’s research findings have been instrumental in shaping policies on delegation for both the American Nurses Association and the National Council of the State Boards of Nursing.

She also has been widely cited by interdisciplinary colleagues worldwide, leading to opportunities for travel and leadership for individuals in other countries.

“It's a real honor to be selected for this recognition as it shows the impact I’ve made on health and healthcare,” said Anthony. “I'm grateful for the people with whom I have worked and collaborated with to advance nursing science and practice. I look forward to future opportunities to further my impact by connecting with this vast network of Fellows who are each influential nurse leaders.”

Anthony served as Kent State University College of Nursing associate dean for research for nearly 14 years while holding a joint appointment as director of research and innovation at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center for 16 years.

She earned a bachelor of science in nursing at St. John College in Cleveland; an master's and doctorate degrees in nursing from Case Western Reserve University.
