We will have live updates all evening.
9:10 p.m.: Field moves to 3-0
For the first time since 2015, the Falcons are 3-0.
Drexal McAmis ran for three touchdowns and the defense pitched a shutout.
Much more to come!
9:05 p.m.: Drexal McAmis seals Field win with third TD run
Drexal McAmis got free around the left end and that was that, a 41-yard TD run to put Field up 21-0 with 2:34 remaining.
9:00 p.m.: Rootstown with less than four minutes to rally
Rovers need to convert this third-and-6 from their own 38, down 14-0.
Just 3:58 remaining.
8:42 p.m.: Drexal McAmis breaks free for two-score lead
The Rovers almost had a third straight three-and-out.
Instead, Drexal McAmis took a draw for seven to convert on third-and-4.
And then on the next play, Rootstown had McAmis in the backfield, seemingly, as he spun out and raced down the left side for a 55-yard TD.
It's 14-0 with 8:25 remaining.
8:37 p.m.: Rootstown driving, trying to tie it up
The Rovers had a strong opening drive of the second half but it stalled in the red zone. Here they come again. Second-and-6 at the Field 36 to start the fourth.
It's 7-0 Falcons.
7:55 p.m.: Field up a score at the half
The Falcons take that 7-0 lead into the intermission despite a threatening Rovers drive to end the first half. Rootstown got into a groove, including a couple of completions in a row, but Field's strong defensive line stood firm.
On third-and-4 from the Field 38, Falcons senior defensive lineman Logan Roberts sniffed out a counter for a TFL. On fourth-and-6, Rootstown QB Blake Mullaly tried to scamper up the middle but Field freshman Braylan Rufener chased him down to force a turnover on downs.
The Falcons knelt to end the half, up 7-0.
7:28 p.m.: Field leads after a quarter
The Rovers face fourth and four near midfield to start the second.
Beautiful job by X'ion Cunningham plugging the middle on a first-down run and Blake Dunderman flying through the gap for a TFL on second down. Third down QB bootleg nets six but lands shy of the sticks.
It's 7-0 Field.
7:16 p.m.: McAmis, Field jump in front
The Rovers bottled Drexal McAmis up on his first five runs. Run number six was a different story as he slipped a tackle in the backfield and burst left for a 30-yard gain. On Field's next play, McAmis pulled the entire pile with him for an 8-yard TD run.
It's 7-0 Field with 5:25 left in the first quarter.
7:00 p.m.: Weather will be a big factor
A downpour took place a minute or two before kickoff.
Especially with this grass field, the weather is going to be a factor all night long!
Tale of the tape between Field and Rootstown
School | 2023 record | Last week |
Field | 4-7 | W 24-17 (2OT) vs. Bay |
Rootstown | 9-2 | W 35-0 at Champion |
- Rootstown has won five straight against Field since the teams started playing every year in 2017 (with the exception of the COVID-altered 2020 season).
- The Rovers' last two wins against the Falcons came by a single score, including last year's 14-7 triumph at Kenneth W. Lohr Stadium .
- Last year's game was knotted at seven until Rootstown scored the game-winning touchdown in the final minute. Dawson Morgan, who ran for 271 yards that night against Field, has since graduated.
Meet the Field Falcons football team
The Falcons are 2-0 for the first time since 2016 following last week's double-overtime victory over Bay. Drexal McAmis continues to lead the way for Field, with 26 carries in each of the last two weeks for a combined 282 yards and four touchdowns. Last year, McAmis made his return from injury against Rootstown, hitting the century mark in his 2023 debut. Victor Brown also found the end zone in that game against the Rovers, taking a pitch 34 yards, and the junior remains a critical ball-carrier as well as the heart and soul of the Falcons' defense. Field is already halfway to last year's win total and seeks its first winning season since 2020.
Meet the Rootstown Rovers football team
The Rovers bounced back from a tough Week 1 performance in impressive fashion. After Crestwood held Rootstown to two points in the opening week of the season, the Rovers rallied for a 35-0 victory at Champion. Truth be told, it was hard to find anything to complain about for Rootstown with running backs Dominic Duvall and Damien Reuting approaching the century mark, quarterback Blake Mullaly completing all three of his passes for 87 yards and the Rovers holding the Golden Flashes to just 130 yards of offense. Rootstown is hoping to extend its streak of two consecutive winning seasons and seven straight postseason appearances.
Meet Field coach Matt Furino
Matt Furino in his third stint leading the Falcons after returning to the helm in 2020 . The Field alum also guided the program from 1996 to 2007 and 2012 to 2015, stepping away twice to watch his daughters play for Lake. Furino currently holds a 101-96 record as the Falcons' head coach. Beyond his record, he has provided needed stability after Field had three coaches in the four years leading up to his return.
Meet Rootstown coach Tom Hannan
A football coach for more than four decades, including a number of coaching jobs in Portage County, Tom Hannan is in his first year leading the Rovers. He took the job after serving as Rootstown's running backs coach last year. In his 28th season as a head coach, with 133 victories following the Rovers' Week 2 win, Hannan is chasing a unique milestone: 100 wins in Portage County with 93 of his 133 victories coming as Crestwood's head coach. He was also an offensive coordinator for the Garfield team that made the regional finals in 2016.
