Second stage of Portage County paving set to begin

More resurfacing work is planned in Portage County townships as the Portage County Engineer's Office starts the second part of its paving program.

County Engineer Larry Jenkins said he recently presented the construction contract for the roadwork to county commissioners. The contract includes four miles of resurfacing in portions of Atwater, Edinburg, Randolph and Rootstown, and more than 5.5 miles of additional pavement repairs in Brimfield, Ravenna and Rootstown.

Commissioners awarded a construction contract for this work to Cardinal Asphalt Company, Inc. of Cuyahoga Falls. The company will be paid $708,743.

The initial contract was for resurfacing of Industry Road, from Taylor to Tallmadge, and Atwater Avenue from German Church to State Route 183. Partial depth repairs will be completed on Peck Road from State Route 5 to State Route 88, Prospect Street from Pershing to the Ravenna city limits, and Tallmadge Road from the Tallmadge city limits to State Route 43.

Sections of the roads average more than 4,500 cars per day.

Jenkins said Industry and Atwater will include treated berms along with the application of center and edge line striping. Peck, Prospect and Tallmadge will be milled and paved in selected areas to extend the life of the pavement.

The contractor said work was to start at the beginning of October. The completion date is the end the month. The public can expect some delays during the contractor’s operation.

Jenkins said the engineer’s office obtained a state grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission to offset the cost of the improvements. The grant will pay up to $152,000 of the project cost. Jenkins said the rest of the project cost will be paid out of the engineer’s regular budget, which is funded mostly from license plate fees and gas tax revenues.

Those with questions about the project can contact project manager Mike Collins at the engineer’s office at 330-296-6411.
