Destiny Longgood and Grace Wheeler scored first-half goals to lift Southeast to a 2-1 victory over Waterloo in Thursday's Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference girls soccer finale. The Pirates (14-0-1) thus made their league title outright after clinching a share with last week's 1-0 win over New Middletown Springfield.

Longgood's goal came off an assist from Sarah Craver while Wheeler's came courtesy of a Maddie Lutes pass.

Alexis Henry scored Waterloo's lone goal in the second half while Bailey Long made several key saves for Southeast.

The Colts defeated the top-seeded Falcons in the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament title game to earn a share of the overall league championship.

Just past the midway point of the first half, Cloverleaf's Nathan Malikowski and Isaiah Kurtz executed a brilliant give-and-go with Malikowski firing away for a 1-0 lead.

Ronan Barczyk added an insurance strike in the 75th minute following a masterful bit of dribbling.

"Nathan, first of all, is a completely well-rounded player," Cloverleaf coach Aaron Cummings said. "He's a smart player, knows the game, knows where to position himself. He was a fullback last year. We've had him at central defensive midfielder, we've had him at forward, we've had him at midfield. Isaiah is just that natural, just speed and athlete, natural forward. Those two have been kind of linking up more and more along with Ronan. It is tough to beat these guys. It takes a play like that to beat these guys. Their defense is incredible. Their keeper is really good."

Meanwhile, Zack Brownson, an imposing figure in net in his own right for the Colts, came up with a beautiful diving save by his post in the 73rd minute and also took command of the box against a Falcons team that can wreak havoc with its deep throws and set pieces.

Cloverleaf, which won its third straight MAC Tournament, will split the overall title with Field, which went undefeated in the conference regular season and clinched its share by making it to the championship game.

"We like being dogs," Cummings said of his team upsetting the top seed in back-to-back MAC Tournament title games. "We're Colts, but we like being dogs."

While Thursday's loss was a heartbreaker, Falcons coach Kevin Sisak said his team can use the experience going into the OHSAA tournament.

"We knew tonight would be a tournament-, a postseason-type atmosphere," Sisak said. "In our minds, it was win or go home. We're just lucky that this is, in a sense, a good tune-up or practice for the postseason, to play under pressure. We played under a lot of pressure tonight, we made some mistakes, which now we know where our weaknesses could be."
