Lawmakers, advocates seek to solve ‘period poverty’ in Pennsylvania schools
(WHTM) — Period poverty in schools is an ongoing problem Pennsylvania lawmakers and organizations are looking to solve. “It is definitely something that has been an ongoing concern and really impacting our youth throughout the Commonwealth,” said Megan Swope, the President & CEO of Making Miracles Happen Inc. also known as the Period Project Harrisburg. “You know, throughout the Commonwealth, over 400,000 people who menstruate are living below the poverty line. And that means that they are probably struggling to afford their sanitary supply. So, what will happen is those that are unsheltered or low income will extend wear or use alternative materials or go without to try to deal with their menstrual flow.”
State police offer tips on how to avoid recent phone scam
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Pennsylvania State Police in Columbia, Carbon, Luzerne, and Monroe counties are warning the public about a recent scam. Troopers say scammers will contact potential victims by phone and claim that a loved one is in trouble and currently in jail or threaten the possibility of jail, even citing specific names.

Wawa sets opening date for first central Pennsylvania store
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (KDKA) -- Wawa will open its first store in central Pennsylvania next month.The gas station and convenience store chain announced on Monday that it will open its location in Middletown on Sept. 19. Wawa is expanding into territory that has traditionally been held by Altoona-based Sheetz, with its newest location on West Harrisburg Pike right next to an existing Sheetz store. Proposed Allegheny County Council bill would have Homeland Security verify eligibility of county voters
Allegheny County Council will soon consider a bill that would require additional steps to ensure only U.S. citizens are registered to vote. The proposed ordinance directs county elections officials to share voter rolls with the Department of Homeland Security prior to the November election, so the department can verify the citizenship of local voters. In the future, the Elections Division would be mandated to confirm every newly registered voter’s citizenship status with DHS.
