The South Hill Rotary Club welcomed Stephen Berry and Doug Wright last week for a fencing demonstration from the La Crosse Fencing Club. Fencing is an organized sport involving the use of a sword—épée, foil, or sabre—for attack and defense according to set movements and rules. Although the use of swords dates to prehistoric times and swordplay to ancient civilizations, the organized sport of fencing began only at the end of the 19th century. The two gentlemen gave the club some facts and statistics about the sport before showing off some of the moves involved that are almost like a dance. All fencers require a jacket, a mask, a glove, trousers or knickers, white stockings, flat-soled shoes, a body cord, and a weapon with which to bout.
