The Trinity girls basketball team relied heavily on a senior and freshman, one named Chloe and the other named Kloe, for its 35-33 win Saturday over Modoc (20-9) in the Northern Section Division V finals at Shasta College.

Senior center Chloe Albiez had 11 points and freshman Kloe Kist scored a game-high 13 for the 19-11 Wolves, including seven in the second half.

“The Chloe/Kloe tandem is pretty amazing,” co-head coach Tori Geist said. “The freshman has come up big for us all year. She plays well under pressure.”

Trinity was helped in the low-scoring affair by a poor night from the free throw line from Modoc, which shot 5-of-22 from the charity stripe.

“We practice them all year and we’re pretty good in practice,” Modoc coach Cal Albright said. “Last time we played them we were 2-of-18.

“I just kept telling the girls to shoot them like you’re shooting them at home, like it’s an empty gym.”

The Wolves were slightly better from the free throw line — 8-of-17 — including 6-of-12 over the final 4:11 of the fourth quarter.

It was, in fact, Trinity’s free throw shooting that helped them flip a 28-27 Modoc lead and salt away the four-point victory.

Geist said it wasn’t the prettiest basketball, but the section title surely was sweet.

“It’s been that way for the last five games (not pretty), but our defense is something we hang our hat on,” she said.

The Braves took the 28-27 lead as sophomore point guard Allie Weber hit the last of three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.

On Trinity’s next possession Claire Cox hit the back end of two freebies to knot the score at 28 before Kist sank two from the charity stripe to again tie the game after a Caelli DePaul bucket for the Braves.

Cox would score down low for Trinity, the Wolves final field goal, to give them a 32-30 edge with 1:30 to play.

Over the final 30 seconds, Kist hit one of two free throws and Albiez knocked down a pair for a 35-31 lead.

Modoc post Julianna Minto was fouled with under 10 seconds left, sinking the field goal, but was unable to complete the old-fashioned three-point play to cut the lead to one point.

“They hit a couple of big shots, a couple big 3s. We had some open looks but didn’t convert,” Albright said.
