A Redding home suffered significant damage Monday from a fire that investigators said was sparked after hot ashes were dumped in a garbage can.

The fire broke out shortly after 11:30 a.m. in the 6700 block of Irving Road, which is in a neighborhood north of Girvan Road and east of Highway 273.

Emergency dispatchers said all of the residents of the home were able to evacuate the house. Crews called a "second alarm" for the fire, which means all available fire engine crews in Redding were sent to the blaze.

The home suffered about $100,000 in damage and the value of the contents of the house were valued at about $100,000, according to the Redding Fire Department.

Roads leading into the area of the fire on Waterford Drive and Irving Road were closed while emergency crews fought the blaze, according to emergency scanner traffic.

"The fire department worked quickly to contain the fire to the primary structure. All of the occupants had safely evacuated the house after a neighbor had warned them that their house was on fire," the fire department said in a news release.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 12:15 p.m., officials said. The fire was ruled an accident.

Redding Fire Department Battalion Chief Shawn Plummer said the fire appeared to start near the garage area of the home. He estimated about 75% of the home was damaged from the blaze.

Fire officials said residents should cool ashes with water before discarding them.
