The Shasta County Coroner's office announced the name of an Anderson man who died after he was thrown from a burning car around midnight on Sunday, Aug. 25.

The crash happened on Buenaventura Boulevard near Teton Drive, about a mile west of Highway 273. Redding Police officers found a vehicle in the center of the roadway, fully engulfed in flames, according to a police report.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire while first responders tended to a passenger who was ejected during the accident, police said.

First responders took 21-year-old Kannon Wayne Chaney to Mercy Medical Center in Redding after the accident, where medical staff declared him deceased, according to a report issued by Chief Deputy Coroner, Lt. Tyler Thompson on Tuesday.

The Shasta County Sheriff's office announced Chaney's name after they told his next-of-kin he had died, according to Thompson.

Police arrested the driver of the vehicle ― 19-year-old Christian Bennett of Redding ― on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, Redding police said, adding that Bennett was allegedly driving without a license.

A second passenger, 20-year-old Hunter Alexander of Anderson, wasn't hurt in the collision, police said.

Bennett is being held on $500,000 bail, the Shasta County Jail website said Monday morning.

The coroner's office scheduled a postmortem examination and the case remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and the Redding Police Department.
