Shasta County General Election: 9 upcoming forums where voters can size up the candidates

Shasta County voting and political party advocates are planning a series of candidate forums, leading up to the 2024 Presidential General Election on Tuesday Nov. 5, 2024.

The public is invited to attend and hear what candidates running in district, city county and North State races have to say on a variety of issues.

Contested races on Shasta County's Nov. 5 ballot include those for Redding, Shasta Lake and Anderson city councils, the race for District 3 Supervisor and school board races. There are also three state races on the ballot: U.S. Congress District 1, State Senate District 1 and State Assembly District 1.

Depending on the district in which they live, registered voters will also vote yes or no on a total of 13 Shasta County measures.

With so many races and measures specific to voters in different school, fire and other districts, the Shasta County Elections office will issue 59 separate ballots, each covering a set of races specific to a district, said Shasta County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Thomas Toller. Those ballots go out in October.

Here's a list of candidate and issue forums and discussions planned in advance of the election, listed by organization in order of first event date.

North State organizations may decide to host more forums later in autumn, so please check back for updates.

League of Women Voters of the Redding Area

The League of Women Voters plans the following public forums:

• State Assembly candidates: 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Cascade Theater, 1731 Market St. in Redding
• Redding City Council candidates: 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Cascade Theater, 1731 Market St. in Redding (follows the state assembly forum)
• Shasta County Supervisor, District 3 candidates: 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Larry J. Farr Community Center, 4499 Main St. in Shasta Lake
• Shasta Lake City Council candidates: 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Larry J. Farr Community Center, 4499 Main St. in Shasta Lake (follows the district 3 supervisor forum)
• Anderson City Council candidates: 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at Anderson City Hall Community Center,1887 Howard St. in Anderson
• Ballot propositions pros and cons : 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 in the social hall at the First United Methodist Church, Social Hall, 1825 East St. in Redding

California Alliance of Retired Americans

The California Alliance of Retired Americans will host its Senior Vote '24 candidate forum from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 20 on Zoom and in person at SEIU 2015, located at 373 Park Marina Circle in Redding.

Candidates invited include those running for Congressional District 1 — candidates Rose Penelope Yee and Doug LaMalfa — and state assembly candidates for District 1, Tenessa Audette and Heather Hadwick.

Redding Chamber of Commerce

The Redding Chamber and V!VA Downtown will host a Redding City Council candidate forum at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the Cascade Theatre, 1731 Market St. in Redding.

Shasta County Democrats

The Democratic Central Committee of Shasta County plans several candidate gatherings this autumn, including Bagels and Ballots from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 2 at 900 Locust St. in Redding. Candidates running in nonpartisan races, including the race for Redding City Council, will be on site to answer questions. Staff will field questions from attendees about the many propositions and measures on Shasta County ballots.

Shasta County Republican Central Committee

Calls, texts and an email this week and last week to the offices of the Shasta GOP weren't returned as of Tuesday afternoon.

No forums are listed on the Shasta GOP website event calendar at shastagop.com/calendar , but that could change.
