A crackdown on street sweeping rules has many residents in Redondo Beach up in arms.

KNX News' Nataly Tavidian explains that it's sort of an unspoken tradition for people to watch as the sweeper makes its pass, and once it does, they park -despite the rule stating no parking is permitted within a specified 3-hour window.

Typically, this behavior has not led to citations, but as a flyer released by the city says, "Effective immediately, the courtesy of "no enforcement" after the sweeper passes by is herby discontinued," and people are not happy.

One resident called it 'government overreach', expressing a sense of injustice, "You know, we pay a lot of taxes. I pay $15,000 a year in taxes for my little 1952 house. It's crazy that I can't park after the street sweeper goes by."

The Redondo Beach Police Department says this courtesy has been extended for many years even though there is currently no provision allowing this in the city's municipal code.

Why the change? There are increasing complaints of noncompliance during sweeping hours. Parking enforcement cannot always stay directly behind the sweeper route and can't tell whether cars moved and re-parked or remained illegally parked.
