Cities facing record heat to get cooling help from trees
This past July was the hottest month on record globally, with heat impacts especially severe in urban areas lacking a robust green tree canopy. In what’s known as the “urban heat island” effect, asphalt and concrete absorb and retain the sun’s warmth. Even after sunset, there’s little relief because streets, sidewalks and parking lots continue to radiate heat for hours. Adding to the problem is heat produced by buildings, vehicle engines and industry.

Solar for all is aim of New Jersey’s ‘community’ solar energy program
There are plenty of great reasons to be interested in solar power: Energy from the sun is plentiful and free, and harnessing it doesn’t pollute the air with greenhouse gases at a time when the impacts of climate change have become a regular threat to our health and safety.

New Jersey’s rarest turtles face many threats
When strolling through your local park this summer, you may have noticed turtles sunning themselves on logs or poking their heads up in lakes and ponds. Chances are they’re painted turtles or red-eared sliders, two of the most common species in New Jersey. Painted turtles are native to the state, while red-eared sliders were introduced from the south but can survive here because winters have gotten milder due to climate change.

Oysters at work: Cleaning water, preventing erosion, helping marine life
When you think of “mighty” animals, a few that may come to mind are lions, tigers and bears (oh my!). The oyster is probably at the bottom of the list. But did you know that one adult oyster can clean 50 gallons of contaminated water a day? And that colonies of oysters, growing together to form a reef, can protect bayside shorelines from storm erosion and provide habitat for a multitude of other species? Oysters may not be physically imposing, but they’re mighty in their impact on the marine environment!

Remember the workers
Labor Day is more than just the last gasp of summer. Hard as it is to believe, summer is nearly gone, and with it, a bumper crop of hefty tomatoes and soft, ripe fruits whose juices dribble down the chin. Toes in the sands of the Jersey Shore. Ears of corn as sweet as nectar.
Friends for the Abbott Marshlands to test water quality through November
August has been National Water Quality Month and volunteers with the Friends for the Abbott Marshlands (FFAM) have been monitoring the water quality in some local waterways. With equipment on loan from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), volunteers visit several locations weekly to test water in Crosswicks Creek, Watson’s Creek, and Spring Lake, according to FFAM. They began water testing in July and will continue through November when the equipment will be returned. While it is too early to report any findings, the aim is to identify patterns in the water quality when comparing the new data to that from earlier projects led by other organizations. For more information or to participate in this water quality testing project, contact Cathy Frank at info@abbottmarshlands.org. Their website will report the findings at the end of the study. To see the results of the testing, check back early next year at https://abbottmarshlands.org/category/news/.
