New group, same goal for Remsen St. Mary’s baseball ahead of State Tournament

REMSEN, Iowa (KCAU) – The Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks return to the IHSAA State Tournament for the ninth consecutive season.

This year’s Hawks team looks a lot different than the state title group from a season ago, only returning a third of its lineup. Outscoring its opponents 21-4 in the postseason, Remsen St. Mary’s has relied on contributions from the entire roster.

One of many faces pacing the Hawks alongside junior ace Collin Homan is classmate Landon Waldschmitt, who boasts a 6-1 record on the mound with a 2.13 ERA to pair with a .346 batting average.

RSM has endured a tough schedule this season as all four of its losses came at the hands of a fellow state tournament team, using those outcomes as learning lessons that have proved key for the Hawks.

“I think that’s a huge part of where we are now. We lost a couple of games, but I think it’s allowed us to grow. Playing a tougher schedule just gets us ready for these bigger games.” Waldschmitt said.

“I think this year may be a little bit more special. We have six new guys from last year’s state championship team. The guys really came together, I’m proud of them. Obviously, it wasn’t easy, they got close in football and basketball and now finally they’ve figured some things out and they’ve gotten over the top.” RSM head coach Dean Harpenau added.

Remsen St. Mary’s will open IHSAA State Tournament play as the #3 seed, facing North Linn on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Merchants Park in Carroll.
