REMSEN, Iowa (KCAU) – There are just nine schools in Iowa that are sending both a baseball and softball team to the state tournament with one of those institutions located here in Northwest Iowa as the Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks softball team makes its return to State along with its baseball squad.

The Hawks’ softball program has accomplished plenty, adding another pillar this season with its fourth consecutive state tournament appearance. RSM takes its undefeated record into Fort Dodge looking to achieve another milestone: win its first state tournament game. The Hawks have lost its last seven games in the championship bracket at State, an outcome that has motivated the group ahead of its state quarterfinal game.

“We just take it one game at a time. Our end goal is to win a State championship. Now we know we’ve got three games to focus on, one game at a time. We’ve got to win the first one and we haven’t done that yet down there…so that’s going to be huge just to get that first win in the first round.” RSM head coach Monte Harpenau said.

“It’s incredible. We have the same girls we’ve been playing with since sixth grade, so it’s good to be with all of them. Just confidence in knowing we have nothing to lose. Even as a senior, you’ve just got to give it your all.” RSM senior Mya Bunkers added.

Remsen St. Mary’s is the #3 seed in Class 1A, where they’ll face sixth-seeded Sigourney in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Iowa Central.
