    Reno, Manogue, Sparks standouts among Champion Chevrolet Athlete of the Week nominees

    These are the May 13-19 nominees for Champion Chevrolet RGJ High School Athlete of the Week, which recognizes top performances among Northern Nevada's high school athletes. Send the names and stats for any outstanding performance by a Northern Nevada high school athlete for consideration for Champion Chevrolet RGJ High School Athletes of the Week list to sports@rgj.com , and cast your vote for the top weekly performance in the poll below. Voting will remain open through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, May 23.

    Amaya Aramini, senior, Bishop Manogue: Aramini won the 1600 and 3200 at the girls 5A state track and field meet on Friday-Saturday at Carson. She won the 1600 in 4:56.63 and the 3200 in 10:44.21.

    Mackenzie Sellers, freshman, Reno: Sellers won the girls pole vault at the 5A state track and field meet on Saturday at Carson. She cleared 12 feet for her personal best and beat the two-time defending state champion.

    Eric Ortega-Gammill, senior, Reno: won the 1600 and 3200 at the 5A boys state track and field meet Friday-Saturday at Carson, setting stadium records in both. He won the 1600 in 4:10.90 and the 3200 in 9:19.07.

    Chris Cormier, senior, Sparks: At the 3A state boys track and field meet on Friday-Saturday at Carson, Cormier won the 100 (10.95); 200 (22.32) and 400 (48.32). Cormier will run for Chadron College in Nebraska.

    Mekhi Brown, senior, Sparks: Brown was second in all three distances at the 3A state meet just behind teammate Chris Cormier: 100 (11.03); 200 (22.58) and 400 (48.98).

    Marni Kraemer, freshman, Galena: Kraemer won the 100-yard backstroke in the 5A Regional swim meet on May 11 and took second at state in the 100 back on May 18.

    Avery Demitropoulos, junior, North Valleys: Demitropoulos won the the 200 IM and 100 butterfly at the 3A Regional swim meet and broke the school record in the 200 IM, for her seventh school record in the past three years. At the 3A state meet, she took third in both the 200 IM and 100 fly.

    Vernita Fillmore, junior, Fallon: Fillmore allowed four hits as the Greenwave won the 3A state softball championship, beating Fernley 11-1 on Saturday. She was also 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. In the semifinal game on Friday, a 6-2 win for Fallon over Fernley, she allowed four hits and struck out seven, going 2-for-4 at he plate with two doubles and a run scored. In Fallon’s first game at the state tournament, a 5-0 win over Pahrump, she allowed two hits and struck out 13, going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, two doubles and a run scored.

    Ava Wulforst, senior, Galena: Wulforst had a career performance against Truckee-North Tahoe in the girls lacrosse regional championship on May 15. She had three goals and two assists in a 15-7 victory as Galena won its fourth straight Regional title.

    Wulforst is the all-time leading scorer in the Galena lacrosse program history with 243 goals and 82 assists. She has been recognized with both first and second team All-league honors every year of her high school career. Wulforst was nominated for the U.S. Lacrosse All-American honors in 2023 and has been nominated for the Adrenaline All-American Honors in 2024 and is on the Adrenaline "watch list." She is committed to play NCAA D1 lacrosse at UMass Lowell.
