Reed avenged an ugly loss from last season thanks to a pair of juniors each scoring two touchdowns as they defeated Loomis, California’s Del Oro High, 28-14, on Friday night at Reed.
Bron Rios and Jayden Purdum each scored twice for the Raiders (2-0). Purdum caught two passes for 93 yards, including a 79-yard catch-and-run from Nishaan Bajwa to give Reed a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. He later scored non a 14-yard pass from Bajwa to extend the Raiders’ lead to 21-7 late in the third quarter.
Rios scored on runs of 3 and 7 yards and finished with 88 yards on 21 carries, including a 25-yard run in the final seconds with seemingly the entire Del Oro defense trying to stop him.
Last year, Del Oro beat Reed, 55-9, in Rocklin, California.
Reed coach Garrett Hughes said the Raiders were not able to finish drives in that game last season.
"And we'd get close on defense but not make the play. That was the difference (Friday), we were making those plays on defense and able to capitalize in the red zone on offense," Hughes said.
Bajwa was 8-of-12 for 176 yards and two scores. Del Oro was whistled for 13 penalties while Reed was called for five.
Reed hosts Twelve Bridges on Friday. Del Oro scrimmaged Twelve Bridges this preseason, so Hughes has that game flim to study.
Purdum broke his thumb early last season when he was on junior varsity and missed most of the year.
"Being in front of the home crowd gave me the little adrenaline boost I needed, " Purdum said.
Also on Friday night; Galena beat Chavez, 29-6; Carson beat Spring Creek, 34-15; Elko beat Douglas, 18-16; and Wooster got past Sparks, 20-19.
