Bishop Manogue Catholic High School President Matthew Schambari has resigned, school officials announced Friday afternoon.

Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg and the school's board of directors accepted Schambari’s resignation.

Schambari had placed himself on administrative leave in March and asked the Diocese of Reno to conduct an independent investigation into girls basketball coach Sarah Schopper-Ramirez's allegations of wrongful termination.

The investigation began in April and is ongoing.

Shortly after Schopper-Ramirez's team won the Class 4A state championship in February, Schambari fired her.

In March, Schopper-Ramirez released a clip of a recording she'd secretly made before the season started. In it, Schambari warns her that giving minority students attending the school on scholarships more playing time than white players would create a problem with parents.

Schopper-Ramirez said she believes she was fired for not following the directions.

Brother Christopher Hall to lead school during search for next president

Mueggenborg appointed Brother Christopher Hall, the Diocese of Reno's new superintendent of schools, to supervise Bishop Manogue and lead the search committee for the next president.

Hall is a member of a religious order known as the Christian Brothers. He has a doctorate in educational leadership and was most recently assistant superintendent for secondary schools for the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey.

In a news release, Mueggenborg said, “As one of Bishop Manogue’s longest-standing presidents, we are so grateful for Mr. Schambari’s commitment to the students, parents, stakeholders, and the entire Catholic community.

“There were many notable successes under Mr. Schambari as the president of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, and we will always appreciate his dedication.

“After much discussion and prayer, Mr. Schambari and his family made the decision to move forward in the best interest of their family. I support and respect their decision, and I wish Mr. Schambari and his family the best.”
