It was a mixed week for new sports venues in the Biggest Little City. First, the arena at the Grand Sierra Resort -- future home of Nevada men's basketball and allegedly the new home of the Tucson Roadrunners minor league hockey team -- got some fancy new renderings along with a one-year delay for its opening (formerly 2026, now 2027).
On the plus side for the arena, though, the developer is the billionaire who already owns the land. That's not the case with the proposed soccer stadium in south Reno, which is seeking to build on open space donated to the city 15 years ago. On Wednesday afternoon, the Washoe Parks Commission voted to reject the proposal .
Is that the end? Not yet. The stadium's backers could take the proposal to the Washoe County Commission for a definitive yes-or-no vote. You know what they say in sports: The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to stage a comeback.
The latest IGTea
Ten years after being sold to Italian gambling company Gtech Corp., IGT is being sold once again. Well, most of it. New York-based Apollo Funds is purchasing the company's gaming and digital operations (that includes slot machines) but not IGT's lottery business. What that means for IGT's operations in Reno and Las Vegas, and for the 1,650 Nevada-based employees, remains to be seen. Jason Hidalgo shares what we know now .
G-g-g-g-ghost kitchen??
The space in the Second Street Walmart formerly occupied by McDonald's is about to be converted into a "ghost kitchen" -- the bizarre offspring of the internet and COVID. Basically, the new spot is just one big food-delivery operation with several different website "storefronts," so all those fun new delivery places you see popping up online are really just the same place with slightly tweaked menus. Granddad's Old-Fashioned Burgers and Kind Bud's Chronic Burger are both serving the exact same burger off the exact same grill, so that savory goodness you're tasting is just marketing. Jason Hidalgo breaks it all down .
