LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — The Stockade Canyon Fire in northwest Nevada has grown to 10,000 acres, threatening historic structures and corrals north of Reno.

It’s the biggest fire currently burning in the state after it ignited on Tuesday, July 23. Information provided by the Bureau of Land Management initially indicated it was started by a lightning strike. The fire is burning through low brush and grass north of Pyramid Lake, about 19 miles northwest of Gerlach.

The fire is 5% contained with 57 personnel on the scene, as well as helicopters and air tankers.

Additional details on the structures that are threatened was not immediately available.

Nevada wildfires have been detected and controlled quickly this fire season, but the Park Fire in California is a reminder of how quickly that can change. The Park Fire — which had consumed about 180,000 acres as of Friday afternoon — is California’s biggest wildfire since 2021’s Caldor Fire.

In Nevada, the Wilder Fire is the largest so far in 2024, burning more than 17,000 acres from July 9 to July 15.

The second-biggest fire currently burning in the state is the Deadhorse Fire in Northern Clark County at 98 acres. It’s in the northern part of the Sheep Range, west of U.S. 93 near the Lincoln County line.

The Butcher Fire in northwest Arizona just north of Dolan Springs along U.S. 93 was controlled at just over 650 acres this week.
