RENSSELAER, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — A groundbreaking was held on Tuesday for the Barnet Mills Redevelopment Project in Rensselaer. The former Barnet & Shoddy Mills site, located along the Hudson River, is being turned into about 70 apartments and 20,000 sq. ft. of commercial space.

Officials said the project will allow the property to reach its full potential.

“So, it’s a healthy, user-friendly atmosphere for anybody and everybody who wants to visit or live here in the city of Rensselaer,” Rensselaer Mayor Mike Stammel said.

Environmental regulators spent the past few years cleaning up the site before construction could begin. The project is being funded through a state grant.
