(Reuters) - Democratic U.S. Representative Steny Hoyer suffered a mild stroke on Sunday but has no lingering symptoms and is expected to resume his normal schedule next week, his office said on Tuesday.

The 85-year-old former House majority leader "responded well to treatment," his office said in a statement.

Hoyer was first elected to Congress in 1981, representing Maryland's 5th district, covering the southern tip of the state.

He was elected as majority leader under Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi from 2007-11 and again from 2019-2022, serving as minority whip when Republicans held the House in the intervening period.

He retired from leadership along with Pelosi in 2023 and is running for reelection to Congress in November's general election. Republicans currently control the House by a 220-212 margin.
